Automated detections of Crocodilians using the BirdNET algorithm

• Passive Acoustic Monitoring is a form of remote sensing that is increasingly useful to ecologists and land managers.
• Acoustic detections from long-term recordings are a cost-effective method to survey rare or elusive species
• Identifying species based on their vocalizations is facilitated by a library of sounds and a trained model; however, this does not exist for alligators, caiman, and crocodiles
• Cadets on this project will:
- Deploy Automated recording Units for 2026-27*
- Annotate crocodilian acoustic data from 2025-26
- Train and evaluate a machine learning model
