Submission Guidelines: AEGIS

Applied Environmental and Geographic Insights for Security (AEGIS) is a platform dedicated to examining global security challenges through environmental and geographic lenses. We seek to bridge research and practice to illuminate how spatial and environmental dynamics shape risk, conflict, war, and stability in a dynamic world. 

We invite contributions from academics, practitioners, analysts, industry leaders, and policymakers who are interested in exploring security issues through the lens of geography and the environment.


What We Are Looking For?

We publish content that places geography and the environment at the forefront of security analysis. Successful submissions typically fall into one of the following categories:

  • Analytical Essays: Deep dives into the relationship between spatial dynamics, the environment, and contemporary security challenges.
  • Case Studies: Historical or current examinations illustrating the importance of geography and environment on security-related topics, operations, campaigns, and battles.
  • Applied Methodology: Theoretical contributions or unique applications of geospatial tools for security.
  • Field Reports: Direct insights and reports from practitioners and analysts in the field.

To maintain the quality of our discourse, all submissions should adhere to the following professional digital standards:

Key Takeaways & Structure

  • The Executive Summary: Every post must begin with a concise 2–3 sentence summary or a “Key Takeaways” list. This ensures the core insight is accessible to readers immediately.
    • Section Headings: Use section headings and sub-headings to organize the
  • Substantive Content & Word Count

    • Word Count: Most submissions should range between 1,200 and 1,800 words. This allows for a rigorous exploration of complex geographic systems while remaining digestible for a professional audience.
    • Information Gain: We seek articles that provide a new perspective, original analysis, or unique data visualization. If a piece only repeats existing online content, it may not be selected for publication.
    • Experience & Expertise: We value experience. First-person accounts, case studies, or original research help bridge the gap between practicioners and scholarspractitioners.

    Transparency & Citations

    • Author Credentials: Every post must  have a brief author biography. This can also include a link to a professional biography page or website. This should include professional certifications, publications, and/or social media links to establish authoritativeness and trust.
    • Citations: Cite original research and other trusted sources. Verifying claims against established scholarship and information is essential for maintaining the integrity of the platform.
    • End Notes & References: We prefer references be hyperlinked in text. See this article as an example. References allow readers to trace the foundational research supporting your analysis.

    Visuals & Technical Basics

    • Structured Data: Use tables and numbered lists for comparative data.
    • Multimodal Content: Since geography is the “canvas upon which affairs unfold,” we strongly encourage original maps or other infographics.
